Welcome to the second instalment of our weekly blog series – The Week in Socials. We’ve hand-picked the most interesting social media news and industry relevant titbits of the week and smooshed them all into one bite sized blog, giving you your Friday fix to enjoy with a well-deserved end of the week cuppa.
Over the years, influencers have taken over our social media feeds, many promoting a massive range of weird and wonderful products. From skincare and supplements to investment advice and figure sculpting leggings, seeing promoted products pop up on our timeline has become the norm.
Advertising standards had to rush to catch up to this new era of promotional practises, and influencers were handed a strict list of compliance rules for any posts that featured on their feeds including requirements to include clear acknowledgement that any product or service featured was an advertisement, paid for or sponsored.
In March, the ASA (Advertising Standards Agency) issued final warnings to a list of 122 UK-based Insta influencers for not sticking to the rules including celebs such as Jodie Marsh and Geordie Shore favourite, Chloe Ferry.
However, those that continued to flout the rules have now been the first to be added to a new non-compliance website, naming and shaming the influencers who will stay on the site for at least 3 months and be subject to spot checks!
Facebook is looking to improve the level of control businesses have over their communications through the introduction of a range of new admin tools.
‘Admin Home’ has been described as “a simpler, more intuitive destination for all admin tools, settings and features that admins can tailor to their needs.”

In 2016, Facebook introduced the ability to create a virtual non-profit fundraiser on the platform, which quickly evolved into personal fundraisers and the common birthday fundraisers we often see popping up on our feeds.
Now, Facebook are working to further the sense of community in virtual fundraising through the introduction of a group fundraising feature on Instagram.
Users can boost awareness of their favourite causes by inviting several other of their friends to band together and work towards a single fundraising promotion within the app.
Facebook claim that over $5 billion has been raised throughout its various fundraising tools on both Facebook and Instagram.
YouTube and VidCon have been synonymous with each other since the conventions inception in 2010.
If you aren’t familiar, VidCon “brings fans face to face with digital creators from a variety of fields for panel discussions, Q&As, workshops, performances and more.” Originally concieved by two YouTube creators, the convention has stood as a flagship event for the platform over since 2013.
But now, YouTube are stepping aside, with TikTok signing on to become the next major sponsor of the convention in 2021.
YouTube will still be present, taking its place amongst the secondary sponsors, but the prominence of TikTok’s takeover signifies the massive growth the platform has enjoyed in the last few years and is an indicator of TikToks firm foothold within the digital creative landscape.
A lot of us have been there. You, or your company, is mentioned in a tweet that you’d rather not be associated with. But you’re stuck there, with no way to remove your @ from the conversation.
Will trolls and bots abundant, Twitter are taking steps to allow users to “unmention yourself from this conversation”, and are experimenting with a number of different variations of mention control to see what sticks.
Removing your mention from a conversation will allow you to remove your @ from any further engagement within the exchange and will delete your handle from the tweets.
Twitter are also looking to introduce a feature to include an ‘unmention yourself’ button when notified that you’ve been mentioned in a tweet by someone you don’t follow, as well as measures to limit who you are mentioned with.
With the rollout of Twitter Blue already in operation, it would seem the platform is making big moves to increase its user experiences.
